According to detailed accounts obtained by the BBC, women in China's "re-education" camps for #Uyghurs have been systematically raped, sexually abused, and tortured.
Ziawudun. She was transported to the "re-education" camp because she needed 'more education.' Her earrings were ripped out, forcing her ears to bleed. "The police had kicked me so hard in the abdomen that it started bleeding. They said it was 'normal' for women to bleed. One day I was taken out and presented to a Chinese man. I was then taken to the darkroom by a woman. They had an electric stick, I didn't know what it was, and it was pushed inside my genital tract, torturing me with an electric shock."
Qelbinur Sedik. An Uzbek woman from #Xinjiang was a Chinese language teacher and was forced to teach the detainees. She confirmed Ziawudun's harrowing experience. "The Chinese police not only rape them but also electrocute them. They are subject to horrific torture. There were four kinds of electric shock - "the chair, the glove, the helmet, and anal rape with a stick. The screams echoed throughout the building, and I could hear them when I was in class."
Gulzira Auelkhan. A Kazakh woman from Xinjiang was detained for 18 months in the camp system. She said she was forced to strip Uyghur women naked and handcuff them before leaving them alone with Chinese men. Afterward, she cleaned the rooms. "The men would pay money to have their pick of the prettiest young inmates. This was a system of organised rape. Some of the women who were taken away from the cells at night were never returned."
President #Xi dominates over the camps. His image and slogans are plastered on the walls. A spokesperson of the Chinese government said, "Our government protects the rights and interests of all ethnic minorities equally. We attach great importance to protecting #womensrights."
As one of the women said, "The surveillance, the internment, the indoctrination, the dehumanisation, the sterilisation, the torture, the rape; their goal is to destroy everyone." The above account is just a tiny part of what #BBC uncovered in their investigative report.
